The story of Westmalle
The Trappist abbey at Westmalle was founded in 1794, and the monks began brewing in 1836, selling beer to the public from 1856. It was here, with a refined 1934 recipe, that the strong golden Tripel was defined, giving the style its name and benchmark.
Westmalle did not invent the word Tripel, but its 1934 recipe set the standard every other Tripel is measured against.
