Privacy policy.
Jolly Monks is a labor of love for Belgian beer. This explains, in plain language, what we collect when you use the site, how we use it, and the choices you have. We collect as little as we can.
Who this applies to
This policy covers jollymonks.com and the features on it: optional accounts, your personal Passport, and the AI features (Ask the Monk and Scan a Label).
What we collect
- When you sign in with Google: your name, email address, and profile picture, as provided by Google. We use these to create and identify your account. We never see your Google password.
- Your Passport: the beers you mark as tried, your wishlist, your cellar (bottles, vintages, quantities), any ratings or notes you add, and earned badges. This is kept in your browser so the site works offline, and, when you are signed in, synced to our database so it follows you across devices.
- Ask the Monk: the questions you ask, plus relevant context from your Passport, are sent to our AI provider to generate a reply. When you are signed in, your conversation is also saved to our database so it is available on your other devices.
- Scan a Label: the photo you submit is sent to our AI provider to identify the beer. We do not store the photo.
- Usage analytics: we limit analytics to site administrators, so we do not track the page views or searches of ordinary visitors or members.
- Outbound and affiliate links: when you click a shop or buy link, the retailer may set their own cookies. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
How we use it
To provide and secure your account; to sync your Passport and conversations across your devices; to personalize the Monk's recommendations; and to operate, maintain, and improve the site. We do not sell your personal information.
The services we rely on
We use a small set of reputable providers, each handling only what it needs to, under its own privacy terms:
- Supabase for authentication and for storing your account and Passport data.
- Google for sign-in (you authenticate with your Google account).
- Anthropic (Claude), the AI that powers Ask the Monk and Scan a Label; it processes your questions and submitted photos to generate responses.
- Vercel for hosting and delivering the website.
- the Amazon Associates program for affiliate links on some outbound shop and buy links.
Cookies and local storage
We use your browser's local storage to keep your Passport and preferences on your device. This is essential to how the site works and is not used for advertising. We do not load third-party advertising or tracking scripts. When you click an outbound buy link, the retailer (for example, Amazon) may set their own cookies.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your Passport and conversation stay until you remove them or delete your account. You can clear local data by signing out and clearing your browser storage. To delete your account and the data we hold for it, email hello@jollymonks.com and we will remove it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete the personal information we hold about you, and to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these, email hello@jollymonks.com.
Age
Jolly Monks is about alcohol and is intended for adults of legal drinking age (21 and older in the United States). It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the legal drinking age.
Security
We use reputable providers and standard safeguards to protect your information. No method of storage or transmission over the internet is perfectly secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes
We may update this policy as the site evolves. When we do, we will change the date below.
