The House of Jolly Monks

About Jolly Monks.

We believe there is a perfect Belgian beer for every moment. Our digital monks are here to help you find it.

The Problem

Belgian beer culture is vast and intimidating. With over 1,600 active beer brands and hundreds of years of history, staring at a beer menu can feel overwhelming. Do you want a Quad? A Gueuze? A Saison? And will it fit your current vibe?

The Solution

Jolly Monks is an intelligent recommendation engine. Instead of asking you about IBUs or yeast strains, we ask about your context: the weather, the season, and your mood. We map these human factors to specific beer characteristics to curate the perfect pour.

About the Jolly Monk

The night everything changed

I will never forget walking into Max's Taphouse for the Baltimore Belgian Beer Fest. I thought I knew beer. I was wrong.

That evening introduced me to a world I did not know existed, a world where beer was not just a drink but an art form perfected over centuries by Trappist monks and master brewers. Where flavors could be as complex as fine wine, and every sip told a story of tradition, patience, and passion.

The moment I tasted my first Duchesse de Bourgogne, with its tart cherry notes and velvety finish, something clicked. This was not just beer. This was poetry in a glass.

Down the rabbit hole

After that night at Max's, I became obsessed. I started seeking out every Belgian beer I could find. I learned about spontaneous fermentation and lambics. I discovered the magic of Cantillon and saved up for a bottle of Cantillon Fou' Foune, that apricot-forward lambic that makes you understand why people travel across the world for Belgian beer.

I fell in love with barrel-aged experiments like Scaldis Prestige de Nuits, where wine barrels transform strong Belgian ales into something entirely new. I learned about Trappist monasteries, about Flanders reds and Wallonian saisons, about the centuries of brewing tradition that make Belgium the undisputed capital of beer.

Why Jolly Monks exists

Too many beer lovers stick to what they know because Belgian beer can feel intimidating. The names are unfamiliar, the styles are complex, and walking into a bottle shop with 200 Belgian beers can be overwhelming.

I created Jolly Monks to be the friend I wish I had had at that first Belgian beer fest. Someone to guide you, to match you with beers you will love, to help you discover your own favorites.

Whether you are taking your first sip of Hoegaarden or hunting for rare lambics, there is a Belgian beer out there that will change your life the way that night at Max's changed mine.

My mission

I believe everyone deserves to experience the magic of Belgian beer. Not just the popular ones you can find anywhere, but the hidden gems, the monastery brews, the wild fermentations that taste like nothing else on earth.

This site is my love letter to Belgian brewing tradition, and my invitation for you to join the journey.

Life is too short to drink boring beer.

Cheers,
The Jolly Monk

How it works

Three factors determine your destiny.

Weather

Sunny days call for crisp Saisons. Rainy nights demand warming Dubbels.

Season

Winter warmers versus summer wheat beers. We align with the calendar.

Mood

Celebrating? A Tripel. Contemplative? A complex Trappist ale.

Curated, not crowdsourced.

We have hand-curated 152 authentic Belgian beers, each with detailed tasting notes, food pairings, and the stories behind them, alongside the regions, monasteries, and traditions that go back 600 years. The recommendation engine uses weather, season, and mood to suggest beers you will actually enjoy, not just what is trendy.
