The story of Leffe
The Abbaye Notre-Dame de Leffe was founded on the Meuse at Dinant in 1152, and its Premonstratensian canons were growing hops, milling grain and brewing by the thirteenth century. The abbey brewery was destroyed and rebuilt more than once, and brewing there ended entirely after the French Revolution. The name was revived commercially in the twentieth century.
Not a drop of Leffe is made at the abbey. The whole range is brewed under licence by AB InBev at the Stella Artois brewery in Leuven, and the abbey is paid royalties on it.
